Paul M. Uyehara is a senior attorney in the Federal Coordination and Compliance Section of the U.S. Justice Department, Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C. Since joining DOJ in 2008 after some 30 years of public interest work in Philadelphia, his primary focus has been the section’s courts language access initiative, which utilizes Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to reduce language barriers through enforcement, technical assistance, and outreach. Paul also chairs the Limited English Proficiency Committee of the Title VI Interagency Working Group, which seeks to enhance and coordinate federal language access enforcement. Previously, he worked for Community Legal Services and other legal services programs, handling bankruptcy, foreclosure, family law, and landlord-tenant cases for low-income clients. For eight years, Paul focused on local and national language rights advocacy and representing limited English proficient clients in consumer bankruptcy and foreclosure cases.
